REM Cycles
Starting with the question of what happens to our bodies when dreaming, this artwork shows the outcome of research on the brain’s activity during dreams, from the brain stem to the cortex. REM, our actual sleeping stage, lasts for around 60 minutes. Within those 60 minutes, our reticular activating system cycles through four different stages: 1) The subcortical and neocortical areas are activated; 2) The neocortical areas are deactivated 3) The sensory input and motor output at the brain stem and spinal cord levels are blocked; 4) The cortical circuits are activated.
